Travel Cheap
Cheap Travel is possible.
Do you want to know how to travel without breaking the bank? Keep reading because this article interests you!
Travelling is often associated with high costs, but it doesn’t have to be that way. I assume that you’re here because, like me, you would rather not spend more than what’s necessary to travel. Am I right?
It’s easy to assume that the cost of travelling to a destination remains reasonably consistent. However, in some cases, the price can actually double or even triple depending on the method of travel or the company you choose to book with. Yes, you read that correctly – the cost can increase by two or three times!
Precisely, trying to reduce trip costs prompted me to organise them myself. If you’ve read my articles, you’ll know I’m not a fan of organised tours for three main reasons:
- They never fully meet my needs or preferences.
- I prefer managing my own time.
- The cost of the trip is higher than organising it yourself.
After years of planning countless trips, I’ve compiled all my tricks into this comprehensive guide.
There is a lot of information that I am going to share with you, so for easier reading, I have divided the content into separate posts where I go into more detail with the specific recommendations.
Therefore, here, I will give you only a brief summary of the different sections and where to find them.
General Tips
1 – Plan
The key to saving while travelling is, undoubtedly, good planning.
Planning the details of your trip in advance can help you stay within your budget. While improvising and leaving things to chance may seem exciting, it can lead to unexpected expenses, mainly if you have limited time. Therefore, planning ahead is always better to avoid spending more than you intended.
It’s not about precisely calculating everything; I mean having a plan. If you have all the necessary information before travelling, you can make more cost-effective decisions and save time.
Knowing the most economical way to get from the airport to the city centre in advance is essential. This way, when you arrive at your destination, you won’t spend time figuring out the best option or end up paying more for a more expensive means of transportation due to ignorance.
2 — Avoid High Seasons
A general rule for saving, which applies to all categories of expenses on a trip, is to avoid the peak season and school holidays. These dates vary from country to country, but summer and Easter are good examples.
Demand is much higher, so prices are going through the roof.
I understand that dedicating yourself to teaching may limit your options, but you can still use my other tips to save on travel expenses, so keep reading!
3 — Choose Cheap Destinations
If you have a limited budget, consider travelling to places with a lower cost of living.
Selecting more affordable destinations will allow you to enjoy a more extended trip and do more while you’re there. If you need ideas, see my post on The Cheapest Countries to Travel to (and the most expensive).
As I mentioned at the beginning, I have grouped the savings possibilities by category and created specific articles for each.
So, the categories for cheap travel that I have considered are the following:
Transportation
Here, I include everything related to hiring means of transportation to get to and from the destination.
My tips to save on transportation are divided into:

Accommodation
Accommodation, along with transportation, is one of the primary expenses in any travel budget. Therefore, it is crucial to know how to reduce this cost. In this article, I will guide you on how to save money on your accommodation while travelling.
Refer to my tips on this topic in “Save on Accommodation”.
Transfers
In this section, I refer to how to move between places once you arrive at your destination, both for transfers from the airport and those between the different cities you will visit.

Money
About money and travel, I have so much information to share with you, which I have collected through:
- My travelling experience (for more than 20 years and to 50 different countries)
