Save on Transfers
Are you looking to save money on travel? And more specifically, saving on transfers? You are in the right place.
Because travelling doesn’t have to be expensive, in this post, I give you tips so you don’t pay more when you travel.
In case there is any doubt, in this section, I am referring to transportation at your destination.
During your trip, it is expected to require multiple transfers, such as:
- Upon arrival at your destination, the first step is usually to go to the accommodation first to drop off your luggage to lighten your load, especially after a long trip.
- If you intend to visit multiple destinations, you’ll need transportation to move from place to place.
- To go back home, you need to return to the airport, station, or port. This may be the same route you took when you arrived, or it may be different if you changed cities.
These are my tips to save on transfers:
General Tips
- ✳️ Search for information beforehand. After a long trip, the last thing you want to do is wander around the airport, station, or port looking for transportation to your accommodation, like a headless chicken. That’s why it’s essential to know the most economical option in advance. This saves you time and ensures that you don’t end up paying more than necessary for transportation.
If you are travelling to one of the destinations I have already written about, check my itineraries in the Destinations section for all the necessary information.
- ✳️ You will save money using public transportation wherever you go. There is no science here; private transfers always come at a higher cost. It’s that simple.
- ✳️ Many cities offer travel passes or cards that allow unlimited use for a set period of time. However, it’s important to calculate how often you plan to use it before purchasing to ensure that it’s a worthwhile investment.
Options ranked from the most to the least economical
The Cheapest
- ✳️ If you can, get around by bike. It is undeniable that this option is the most environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and enjoyable way to go!
Nowadays, an increasing number of cities are implementing bike lanes, making it an affordable and convenient mode of transportation that offers door-to-door accessibility.
Not so Cheap
- ✳️ Whenever you can, it’s better to avoid taking taxis, as they tend to be expensive. If you have no choice, consider using more economical alternatives like:
- Uber: It offers private transportation services at cheaper rates and is an ideal choice for short distances.
- Bolt: Like Uber. Also, for short-distance rides.
- Cabify: Similar to the previous ones. It charges based on the optimal route’s distance per kilometre.
*When travelling, check which companies operate at your destination, as not all are available in every country.
- ✳️ Another affordable option for intercity travel that I have personally used is BlaBlaCar. It consists of sharing a car and expenses with other people who will make the same journey as you. The system operates in nearly all parts of Europe.
- ✳️ In some cases, it may not be feasible to use public transportation to travel from the airport, station, or port to your accommodation due to time constraints or location. In such situations, hiring a private transfer can be a more convenient option than taking a taxi. Companies like Civitatis.com provide this service at reasonable prices, particularly if you’re travelling in a group. Additionally, you can pre-book private transfers in advance, which can save you time and effort.
The Least Cheap
- ✳️ Renting a vehicle can be a worthwhile option depending on the type of trip you’re planning.
It is not usually the cheapest option, but if there are several of you travelling together, the cost per person can compensate.
If you plan to travel to places that are not easily accessible, renting a vehicle at the start of your trip can provide you with much flexibility and coverage for all your transfers. This way, you can make various trips to different locations without any hassle and enjoy the freedom of having a vehicle at your disposal.
I would rule out a car if it’s a trip to a big city where using public transport is the most effective, cheap, and eco-friendly option. If you choose to rent, make sure to check out my specific article on Car Rental, where I cover everything you need to know about the subject.
