The Cheapest Countries to Travel (and the most expensive)

What are the cheapest countries to travel to?

Are you looking for a cheap holiday destination?

You are in the right place!

We all want to reduce our holiday expenditure, and choosing more affordable destinations allows you to enjoy a more extended trip and do more things while there.

There are many similar lists online, but every so often, they are contradictory, so let’s clarify a couple of things:

1 – Travelling Vs Living in a Country

A country can be very cheap to live in but costly for travellers, or vice versa. A country can be affordable for foreigners with a strong currency and expensive for locals due to low incomes.

Nevertheless, the price indices can give you an idea of how expensive a country is. The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development) publishes very interesting Comparative price level indices because they are objective.

2 – Destination Vs Country of Origin

The country of origin is important when establishing this kind of list. Because a country can be considered more or less expensive depending on what you compare it with, hence your country of origin.

There are a few factors that can affect the ‘perception’ of a country being cheap or expensive:

a) The currency

If you live in a country with one of the strongest currencies, travelling to most places will make you think they are cheap. However, if your local money is weak, it will look expensive wherever you go.

b) The distance to your destination

Transportation is one of the most significant chunks of any travel budget. So, the farther the place you are going to, the more expensive it’ll be, as simple as that.

For example, Mexico is one of the most affordable destinations for Americans. Still, it isn’t that cheap if you go from Japan.

[This excludes the possibility of you having all the time in the world to go by foot, bike or any other cheap method, or to add many intermediate stopovers until you arrive.]

Thus, to select the cheapest countries to visit, I’ve considered the following:

A strong currency in the country of origin (like USD, EUR or GBP).

Europe as a starting point.
